Caution when choosing the detergent..

Synthetic and low-grade detergents may damage the wool fibres.
By their ingredients these detergents are not suitable for natural fibres and not treated wool. They contain enzymes which damage the protein molecules of the sensitive wool fibres and may – in worst case – destroy it completely. It may also cause a swelling of the fibres with the result that the garment looses its shape and even is getting pilled and felted.

Please only use ecologic detergents! These have a neutral PH value and do not contain the protein splitting enzyme. They are fibre caring and conserve the sensitive fibre structure. They also contain the wool fat lanolin which is very important for woollens and do not only clean but also conserve by its re-fatting feature. Your garments will constantly keep their shape, their intensive colours and the smooth character.

Below you will find our recommendation. We achieved best results with it. At the same time it is a good decision for the skin and the environment.

Stains

If there are stains on your woollen garment please remove immediately , before it is adhering to it.

You should however avoid the washing machine or stain removers.

DO NOT RUB, prefer rinsing.

This protects the wool and the environment and causes no problems!

Heavy strain

In case that wool is dirty and airing is no longer sufficient, you should wash it with an ecological detergent especially for wool. Always choose wool washing without spinning!

There may be reasons to often wash a garment when it is heavily strained. In this case it is very important to use a re-fatting wool detergent, that is cleaning and caring the fibre to maintain its elasticity, colour and touch for a long time.

If your garment is feeling rough and inelastic, it is a sign that the normal re-fatting process by a wool detergent is no longer efficient. But there is help! You may use a special wool treatment also called wool bath. It is a liquid to be used according to instructions. Wool should remain in this bath for 1 – 2 hours!
It is similar to a hair treatment. Fibres are recovering naturally and feel smooth and cosy again.

If the process of felting is advanced, so that the fibres feel brittle and even tear when stretching, there is no more cure, not even with a wool bath.

Pilling

How to avoid pilling or remove it carefully:

Pilling is a normal, natural effect and is often considered as a “proof” of a natural wool. Pilling is caused by friction to itself, to other garments or especially to synthetics and does not look pretty..

Do not worry, there is a simple and cheap trick!

You only need a wet razor and some skill. Stretch the cloth slightly and remove the knots with the dry razor carefully. This is a bit tricky but removes the pilling for a long time for the fibres are cut. With a wonder brush you are removing the knots by pulling out some fibres, which cause pilling again. This is the reason why you have to use the brush more often.

There are wonder brushes for different uses.

Please only use the wonder brush adequate for wool pilling Wunderbürste ® ORIGINAL by William Leistner” No. 6s 06 o.

You may avoid pilling by a good care!
A dry woollen fibre is pilling more often than a fibre supplied with enough humidity. Give your garment a humidity shower by hanging it in foggy air outside or in bathroom when it is still vaporous. A re-fatting detergent guarantees that the woollen hair is adhered to the fibre when washed.
